Fed: Costello rules out challenge to Howard

PETER COSTELLO has ruled out launching a challenge to Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD some
time during the next three years, declaring he's happy to stay on as treasurer.

Pressed on the issue at a joint press conference with Mr HOWARD, Mr COSTELLO has told
reporters he's running to be treasurer under Mr HOWARD.

Mr COSTELLO says he's been part of the HOWARD team for eight-and-a-half years and his
loyalty is not under question.

Mr HOWARD says no one could have had a more loyal and effective deputy, and he says
Mr COSTELLO's been an incredibly successful treasurer.
